Victor Hugo's ingenius, epic novel of the poor and disenfranchised of the new republic of France, centering on the plight of escaped convict Jean Valjean, imprisoned for stealing bread, and the efforts of the tenacious policeman who is hellbent to recapture him. A dense, but gripping and unsettling novel detailing those who, driven by desperate measures of hunger and poverty, go to great lengths, sometimes unlawfully and duplicitously, to assuage their hunger and/or dire situation, if only momentarily. An amazing and astounding novel highly recommended!
Best philosophical work I have ever read. Clear enough so the reader get's the point, yet opaque enough so there is much room for interpretation
A book for those who love words. A quick read.
