Must Read - 3 Meaningful - 3 "For a few moments we discover that nothing can be taken for granted, for if this ring of stone is marvelous then all which shaped it is marvelous, and our journey here on earth, able to see and touch and hear in the midst of tangible and mysterious things-in-themselves, is the most strange and daring of all adventures." - p. 45 And I whole-heartedly endorse his radical recommendations for our national park system that begins on page 65.
I liked the story, and he's obviously a good writer. Yet, even by the end of the book, I still found his style annoying, like he was trying too hard.
I WANT to like classics! They're classics for a reason, are they not? But I thoroughly disliked this novel. I read it hoping that I'd love it just as much as every hopeless romantic I've ever encountered has loved and raved about it- but it just didn't work out that way for me. It was entertaining enough to finish and was remarkably well-written and catching in some parts; for the most part, I vaguely felt even glimpses of real love and devotion between Catherine and heathcliff. They seemed well-suited as they're both pains in the ass to all those around them! Other than that though, they're intolerable. The book was more or less filled with several assholes (pardon my French) and fits of rage....oh, and lots of misogynism! And I didn't know this prior to reading this: but apparently you CAN die from having a temper tantrum! (ie: our dear Catherine) forgive me....I feel wrong blasting a literary great...but all I saw in Heathcliff was a sadistic, vengeful, MEAN man. He settled far more than his score and ruined the lives of so many for what? A snobby, inconsiderate fool of a woman. Whom if I'd known personally I would've beaten some sense into her, woman-to-woman! She acted like a spoiled teenager. Let's put it this way: the only 2 characters that I liked in their entirety were Ellen and Edgar.( and perhaps Isabella cuz I just felt SO BAD for her!) Every other character had some point where they became insufferably irritating! This was very little romance in this "romance" and in it's stead, a lot of unnecessary cruelty!
