Quirky, bizarre, and engrossing. Her best.
I am in my 6th year of homeschooling and I use this reference book over and over again! It is a must-have!
This is the story of Rhodesia told from the point of view of a middle-class, white British settler. It is not the view we often hear. Fuller told her own story in Don’t Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight (a delightful book) but Cocktails under the Tree of Forgetfulness is really Fuller’s mother’s book. The voice is that of Fuller interpreting her mother and is unlike any memoir I have ever read. It is funny and sad and when you least expect it, very deep.

i used this classic as one of the reference for an article I made about caste in Bali in 2010. an elaborated exploration of kinship in Bali, vividly explained for a newbie like me.
Detective stories without detectives. Mysteries without resolution. Stories about stories, and writing about writing. If you can make this compelling instead of insufferable, then you are Paul Auster.
